Even kids that were not even born in the 90s are tapping into the 90s nostalgia that came with the clothes, the sound of the music and everything else in between. The Quiet Storm was definitely a part of that era. I was listening to this mix in my car and thinking about how this type of music would hardly top the charts today. Hip hop has taken over completely. There was a time, however, when ballads were a big deal. These artists were a big deal, and this is just a small part of a bigger group of songs that stand out as some of my favorites. I posted this mix on MixCloud, but I found out that they will not let mixes that have the 5 or more of the same songs by the same artist play. It's a collection of my favorite Moonchild songs so that sucks that it is not accessible. Anyone that wants to listen to it can contact me directly at [email protected]

So Labor Day has come and gone, and fall is on the way, but the summer tracks just keep coming. I had to throw Normani on the cover just for the strong summer smash “Motivation” video alone. She ignited a flame with a hot summer track as summer was about to be over. That is where I came up with the idea for a “Summer Extended” mix. I felt like she was saying, with her video, that “Summer, it’s not over yet. I have something to say [to 5th Harm…]” Okay, maybe she wasn’t speaking direct to her old crew, but I did feel like she was stepping up. That has to be the video of the year. (Yes I know that is premature since we haven’t even it to the fall season yet). I pulled a couple of other tracks from years past and made an “Summer Extended” mix. Mariah, Timbaland, Rhianna, Ciara, Brandy and a couple of others are included here. I guess I have been sleeping on DUCKWRTH because the opening track here, “Crush,” is banging, but I honestly didn’t know anything about all the other tracks that he had before this one. I have to admit that he sounds a lot, too much, like Pharrell on "Crush." It is hard to avoid comparisons. I don’t mind though. It’s a nice beat, and it feels like a track that could have blown up at the beginning of the summer. Not sure why he waited until about 13 days until fall to release it though. Anyway, enjoy! My club days are over, but I imagined what a night in the life of a hot girl (with some admirers standing by) would sound like from both sides of the table via this mix. I didn't choose a lot of the over saturated songs that some of this summers' hot girls may have grown tired of. I decided to just explore the concept through music, through a number of tracks that were more fitting for a conversation between men and women on a night after midnight. We start with Trey Songz and his anthem to drinks, drinks and more drinks (Bottoms Up Ladies!) From this Foxxy Brown entertains a conversation about leaving the spot and finding something much better to do at home. Luda and T-Pain are buying drinks...I think we all see where this is going here. From there Ella Mai prompts you to shoot your shot while Summer Walker, well...she just needs some... Summer just tells you exactly what she wants, what she needs (*this mix contains a "clean" edit). Enter Lexxy (over a Drake sample),voicing how her man only seems to be talkative after a couple of drinks. She appears to be the designated driver of the group for the night. You gotta have one of those. Midway, we move on to the atmosphere of those strippers that make every night a hot girl summer night. Drake is giving his ode to the ladies on pole. After this Kelly appears, much like Summer Walker, to be very vocal about what she likes and where she likes it. Beyonce is turning up with Andre 3000 for a party while Miguel and Kendrick are still trying to figure out how many drinks it will take to do what Foxxy Brown already planned to do earlier. Finally we end it, and switch things around. The surprise twist at the end is Ella Mai. She's back. She told you to shoot your shot, and now she, the female, is the one that is asking how she can get you home for the night and the morning after where she can give you that breakfast in bed. Enjoy! For this mix I was really interested in mostly bringing together a mix of some artists that are not quite mainstream. Some of these artists may have like millions of viewers on YouTube for their views, but the rest of the world is still sleeping on their talent. I wanted to bring some of their music to the spotlight. So, if you are looking for some late night vibes here are a couple of hidden gems.
I took a little time out to go back through some of my favorite older songs from a time where R&B had a different type of vibe. May be hard to believe, but before everything became all “straight to the bedroom” music there were actually songs that spoke about love. There were songs that presented the mere ideal of getting a chance to talk to a woman as something that was worth singing about. So, for those that have a starry eye view of those times I present: #CLM04 - 45RPM Love:
Just gonna put this right here.
Joyce Wright - "Blurred Lines." No, it's not a Robin Thicke remake. It's a nice slow groove that I should have discovered in 2018 when it was released. I know there are other tracks, but I haven't heard everything from her yet. I just know that the sound sparked my attention enough to post something. She has worked with SiR, who has also worked with Alex Isley. Wrice is also in California, so that sound is part of a common thread that I think is building on the west coast. I am looking forward to more from what appears to be another young talent from the West. This is her website: https://www.joycewrice.com If you have seen PJ Morton performing you are probably already familiar with The Amours. This duo is making some great music. The Mon Amour project is an EP that dropped in April 2019. It will leave you wanting more from these two. There is a sound that is reminiscent of Morton, but Jaikya and Shaina are able to hold their own. I knew when I saw the Gumbo Unplugged performance that these ladies had a sound nice enough to put them in the spotlight.
I was unaware, however, that an EP was on the way. All the songs are under 3 minutes so you will probably listen multiple times and wish that there was more to consume.I hope that these 6 songs are the beginning of many more tracks to come because their vibe is a nice beginning to melodic summer. |
