For what it's worth, I typically invest most of my energy in independent artists. Yeah, I like a lot of mainstream stuff, but you are going to see me hyping up more artists that don't get a lot of airplay on radio. (Wait, do people still listen to the radio?)
I will have to admit, however, that Beyonce created a mind blowing stage show with Homecoming. Even if you are not a fan, you have to give her the props that are deserved because she put the work in. Yes this performance is a year old and there are videos on YouTube, but the Netflix special is crisp and clear. There is also the Beyonce backstory, the road to Coachella that is intertwined inside of this concert film. Homecoming is a lengthy concert, but it keeps you entertained. It's hard not to be in awe of the final result of all this hard work that was months in the making. This is legendary work, a super impressive show from the mother of 3. (Yes, let that soak in: THE MOTHER OF 3!)

I came across Alex over a couple of years ago, before this blog even got started. I hate to say that I have been sleeping on her and the abundant amount of material that she has released. I am awake and hopefully you are too if you are reading this. She has a laid back sound - for the most part - and her music instantly makes me think of King, a duo (formerly a trio) that I love!
I am certain I will have more drooling to do about the dope music that Alex creates later, but for now just believe me and recognize the talent. You can find out all you need to know, how to purchase her music, etc. on her website when you click here: lovealexisley.com PJ Morton has been doing his thing for a while, and he is finally getting the recognition that he deserves. JoJo...well, we always knew that she could sing, but in my opinion she never seemed to have the songwriters in place that would lead her to stardom. This connection with PJ Morton could change all of that.
It was pretty unexpected because their solo catalogs don't even sound similar. You would never start with a PJ Morton playlist on any streaming app and end up with JoJo songs creepying into your playlist - until now! This is only one song, but it is fire, so I am excited about anything that JoJo may be bringing to the table in 2019. She has been away for a while, but anyone that has followed her knows that she should have been doing her thing in R&B long ago when labels were trying to force her to be a pop star. On this track you can tell that JoJo is feeling at home with this awesome connection with PJ Morton. Emily King is back! If you haven't heard of her I congratulate you for mastering the art of sleeping under a rock. Now that you are up, go out and grab this!
Today is February 1st, and Valentine's Day is right around the corner. The temperatures are gonna keep some people inside for sure! So, this mix is for those late nights, warm fireplace nights and everything else in between.
You can listen here: (link will open another tab while leaving this blog tab open). www.mixcloud.com/CLtheMixologist/clm03-love-potion-no-9/ I am just going to say if you don't know Moonchild now is the perfect time to find out more about this group - https://thisismoonchild.bandcamp.com.
I was a bit worried that Amber- the dreamy vocalist that is also the songwriter for this track - was breaking away from this group when she released her solo EP, but it appears that the trio is still a trio. "Get To Know It" is the latest single. Hopefully a new album is on the way. The Voyager album was great. Another sleeper album in 2017 that didn't get the recognition that it deserved, but now you know. And now that you know you can go and add this great group to your playlist. You're welcome. So, it appears the Anita (on the right) has departed from King! The trio that seemed to do no wrong with their debut album is now a duo. A twosome, a dyad, a pair...all sweeting sounding phrases that Merriam-Webster used to define two people. It is somewhat bittersweet, however, to know that this group has one less member.
I am looking forward to more music any way that I can get it - trio, duo, solo. Their sound is great so I am certain that the vibe will continue. At least they gave it one great album while they were all together (even though a lot of people slept on them). No love lost Anita! Love you all the same. Thanks for the time you music you gave us. Paris and Amber, we will be waiting. H.E.R. gets my vote for Artist of the Year. The full album is going to be one of the most anticipated of 2019. She had a slow buzz that accelerated thanks to "Best Part" with Daniel Casear, but H.E.R. was dope long before that. She has a vibe that puts her in a space that is all her own. Sonically, she tends to make mood music, and her extended play sessions are cohesive. Obviously we all want more, like 'full album" more, but with one EP after another she has continued to lure us in and practically make us beg for more. Brandy was known for some great cohesive albums with Rodney Jerkins that had a vibe. Aaliyah had the same magic with Timbaland. H.E.R. captured the lighting in a bottle vibe that we have been missing. This talent may be just what we needed to revive R&B. It is autumn, and the leaves are falling and this is typically one of those great times for that picnic in the park with someone special. So it may be corny, but the title of this mix, Fall in Love, is a play on words for the time of the season. Enjoy. This is also, coincidentally, is the season that my love has come into my life. So get your picnic baskets ready, head to the park and take this mix with you. You welcome. Note: I didn't know exactly when the fall season ended, so I had to look it up LOL. This cover is actually a tree I saw in my neighborhood while "jogging" (read as 80% walking with 10% jog, followed by 10% heavy breathing). Fall Season Start: September 22 End: December 21 You can listen Here : https://www.mixcloud.com/CLtheMixologist/
It is rare that I co-sign on a whole album, but I will say for gospel fans Kim McFarland's 1996 album Amazing was good stuff. According to Amazon she only released 2 albums. I have only heard this one, but I bought it and was not disappointed with my purchase. I wish her catalog was more extensive because she has a nice voice. Worth buying in my opinion.
